Cheap laptops

Computer manufacturers are competing against each other for every sale.

We now see sub $1000 laptops/notebooks as “norm”. However, if it sounds to good to be true then it usually is.

Buying a cheap laptop to use as your primary computers is not recommended.

You will find that you be replacing your “cheap” laptop year after year. So you will probably pay $1000 a year for a computer.

Better value is to spend $1500 or so, and have a computer that you replace in 3 years.

This will give you a cost of $500 a year, half the cost.

Spend a little more, and get a lot more.

Geez, spent 3 hours on the phone today trying to solve a technical issue.

I diagnosed the fault within 5 mins and spent the rest of the time trying to get them to believe me.

After 3 hours they finally admitted a fault at their end and started to fix the problem.

In our business we don’t use them for anything, they are twice the price and twice as crap.

The good news is there are plenty of alternatives. Get in contact to find out.

Desktop Computer or Laptop?

Do you ever find yourself asking the question, Desktop or Laptop?

Well let us help you with the pros and cons….

Desktop Computers are great value for money. They have higher specifications for around the same price. They can usually be repaired on site, and if not they can be bought back to our workshop and repaired more quickly than a laptop.

You will also find that they are a lot more reliable than a laptop, as they are less likely to break down. This makes them a great first computer for your business.

The only downside to a desktop computer is its not portable. Laptops are great when you need a computer to take with you where ever you go.

Being able to take them with you where ever you go is a definite advantage, but this means that they can get scratched, bumped or even worse dropped because they are more fragile.

Laptops are a lot more expensive to repair because the parts are specialised and will often have to go back to the manufacturer for repair.

Unlike the desktop computers they can’t be repaired on site.

So our advice is get a good quality desktop computer first and a laptop second.

32bit or 64bit?

It’s a transitional period for computers at the moment.

With Windows 7 coming along, 64 bit computing is becoming mainstream.

A 32bit operating system can only “see” 4GB RAM where are a 64bit version can use a lot more.

The amount of RAM that can be used is limited to what the motherboard can support. Most current notebooks/laptops can only support 4 GB RAM so buying a 64bit operating system isn’t a huge advantage.

Buying a new desktop computer is different. Systems we are supplying support 8GB RAM. Shortly we will be supplying systems that can take a whopping 16GB RAM.

The downside to 64bit is hardware drivers, particularly for printers and scanners.

However is much better to replace a printer that have to replace a new computer in 12 months time.

Our advice, bite the bullet, get 64bit Windows 7 Professional.
